What you get

What PDF to Word does, and what it doesn't

We'd rather tell you up front than surprise you after the download.

What you get

  • All the textEvery word that is real text in the PDF comes across, ready to edit.
  • Real Word headingsLarge or bold lines become Heading 1–3, so the navigation pane and table of contents work.
  • Bold, italic and bulletsEmphasis is kept word by word, and bullet points become real Word bullets.
  • Flowing paragraphsBroken PDF lines are joined back into paragraphs that wrap as you type.
  • Layout basicsPage size, margins, centred lines and page breaks carry over.

Good to know

  • Images aren't includedPictures stay out of the Word file. Save them with Extract PDF images.
  • Tables become textTable cells come through as lines of text, not Word tables.
  • Scans need OCRA scanned page is a photo of text, which this tool can't read. You can still save it with PDF to JPG.
  • Password-protected filesRemove the password with Unlock PDF first, then convert.
Private by design

Your PDFs never leave your device

The tool runs inside your browser instead of on our servers, so there is nothing to upload, store or delete afterwards.

Your file travels over the internet, sits on someone else's computer for a while, and you wait for the upload and the download.

Mediaextractr no upload

Your device does all the work

The tool loads into your browser once, then works on your file locally. Nothing is sent, so nothing can leak.

What PDF to Word conversion actually does

A PDF is built for printing and sharing: every letter sits at a fixed spot on the page, so it looks the same everywhere. That's also why it's hard to edit. There are no paragraphs, only short lines of text placed one under another.

Converting PDF to Word reverses that. The converter reads every piece of text, works out which lines belong to the same paragraph, spots headings from their size and weight, and rebuilds the document as a .docx file where text flows the way it does when you type.

Quick test: open your PDF and try to select a word. If you can, it has real text and will convert well. If the whole page highlights like a picture, it's a scan.

Tips for the best result

A few choices make the Word file much easier to work with:

  • Use the original PDF exported from Word or Google Docs, not a printed and re-scanned copy.
  • Keep Detect headings on for reports and manuals to get a clickable outline in Word.
  • Turn Keep page breaks off if you plan to rewrite a lot, so text flows freely between pages.
  • Need only part of it? Type the page numbers, or cut them out first with Extract PDF pages.
FAQ

Questions, answered

Is this PDF to Word converter free?

Yes. There's no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit. Convert as many PDFs as you like.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs inside your browser, so your file stays on your device the whole time.

Will my formatting be kept?

Text, headings, bold, italic, paragraphs, bullet points, centred lines, page size and page breaks carry over. Images aren't included, and tables come through as lines of text.

Can it convert a scanned PDF?

No. A scanned PDF is a picture of text and needs OCR. This tool reads the real text inside a PDF and tells you if it can't find any.

Does it work on Mac, iPhone and Android?

Yes. It works in Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox on computers, phones and tablets. Nothing to install.

Which apps can open the Word file?

Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Apple Pages, LibreOffice and WPS Office all open .docx files.
